Though we consider the reading of good Christian books essential to one's growth as a Christian, or to one's becoming a Christian in the first place, yet as John Bunyan says about reading the Bible:
“Pray and read, read and pray; for a little from God is better than a great deal from men.”
In recommending a book, it does not mean that I agree 100% with everything in the book; that is impossible to do with any book, or any author. I am recommending these books because I believe they will help you grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus. They will teach you things you may not have previously known, and/or they will sharpen your understanding of what you already know. Even when we disagree with what an author writes, it causes us to re-think our position, and that in itself is beneficial to us. Here is what Charles Spurgeon says about reading Christian books.
“The Mirage of Life”
“Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” (Ecc. 1:2) Miller exposes the folly of all the areas of life which the world considers important….It’s all a mirage!
“Ignatius to the Romans”
Ignatius To The Romans: Ignatius of Antioch was one of the early church fathers who was martyred in Rome for refusing to to give his honor and worship to Caesar.
“Confidence in God in Times of Danger”
A book that will strengthen your faith more and more every time you read it.
“Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God”
A must read for anyone who has contemplated the relationship between the sovereignty of God & personal evangelism.
“On the Bondage of the Will”
One of Martin Luther’s most important works. Not a easy read, but worth every ounce of effort put into it.
“Exposition of the Epistle to the Romans”
The just shall live by faith….one of the most important commentaries on the book of Romans.
