“The Mirage of Life”

“The Mirage of Life” by William Haig Miller.

This is one of the best books of its kind that I have ever read. In straightforward language it clearly shows the vanity of this life.

This life is a mirage! “Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” (Ecc. 1:2)

The Bible uses words like: Dream, smoke, midst, vapor, shadow, grass, dung, a tale that is told; fleeting, temporary, and vain. And short: “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” (Psa 90:10)

Miller exposes the folly of all the areas of life which the world considers important. Here is the table of contents.

There is an illustration for each chapter; here is The Monarch, loving the praise and adoration of the people.

This book is very readable.

For the Christian, it reminds us that in forsaking the world, we have forsaken the visible, temporary, to get the as yet un-seen eternal. “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Co 4:18) If you are not a Christian, it should give you much to think about, waking you up to see the deceptiveness of riches, fame, and fortune. For you young adults just starting out in life, it will warn you to take heed which road you pursue, the broad road, on which most of the people are traveling, but which leads to death and destruction, or the narrow road, which leads to life.
