The God of Might
The God of Might
We have here a clear statement that Jesus Christ is God - period!
Is this not a "wonderful" statement, both good and beyond our comprehension?
This is the key issue, the key question: Who is Jesus?
I wrote a Blog on this, "I Am," in which I showed that Jesus clearly stated that he is Jehovah: I AM, and so I will not repeat that here, except to note the two (2) key verses:
"I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am, ye shall die in your sins." Joh 8:24
"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am." Joh 8:58
These two statements are NOT the same as "I am the good shepherd;" in the above he simply says, "I AM."
Everything hangs on whether Jesus is God. He said he was, so if he is not, then he is a lying deceiver, or a lunatic, and should not be followed; but if he is ... well, that changes everything for everybody, all over the world, for the entire span of history!
This verse clearly says this child, this son, is himself, in his own person, God.
So the angel reminds Joseph of Isaiah's prophecy in Isa 7:14:
"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." Mat 1:23
When Jesus was brought to trial, he was tried before two (2) courts: the Jewish court and the Roman court, but both courts tried him on the same count: Was he God?
The Jews asked him, and he responded clearly, and that was the basis for his conviction.
"But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy." Mat 26:63-65
Based on that affirmative statement, that he was God, which the Jews did not accept, but upon which they accused him of blasphemy, a crime worthy of death, they condemned him to death, but since the Romans did not allow the Jews to impose capital punishment on criminals, the Jews were forced to bring him to the Roman governor, Pilate, and to him they said:
"The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God." Joh 19:7
The Jews clearly understood what Jesus was saying, and so did Pilate; Jesus said he was God.
What do you think?
Was Jesus a liar? A deceiver? A lunatic? Or was he telling the truth?
All of you who think Jesus was just a man - WRONG!
All of you who use his name as a cruse - BIG MISTAKE!
All of you who think you can sin with impunity - WRONG AGAIN, HE IS THE JUDGE!
We love the baby in the manger; he is no threat to us when he is wrapped in swaddling cloths and lies in a feeding trough; but the God of Might, who will judge the living and the dead?
That's a problem!
Hear again what Jesus said to the Jews after he clearly said that he was God:
"Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."
Those people, the every same ones, did in fact did see him sitting on the right hand of power, for when they were stoning Stephen, Stephen told them:
"When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord," Act 7:54-57
And when Jesus returns, coming on the clouds of heaven, to judge the living and the dead, those who pierced him, shall see him:
"Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen." Rev 1:7
This Blog is not about Jesus returning to judge; the point is, that in his defense at his trial, he linked his being God with his return to judge, and so each of us must deal with this question: Who is Jesus? because he will return to judge us.
I started out saying, the key question is, Who is Jesus? Is he God? I think I have answered that question.
But note Isa 9 says he is "The God of Might."
That word is Strong's H1368 "gibbôr," which means: powerful, and by implication warrior, tyrant, champion, chief, excel, giant, man, mighty one, strong one, valiant man.
It is always used regarding warriors, fighting, etc. This is not just talking about him being strong in some generic way, it is a specific term regarding him as a fighting man.
So not only this does state Jesus is God, but tells us Jesus is the coming warrior king who rides upon the white horse (Rev 19) and defeats the Beast and the False Prophet and Satan (Rev 19 & 20) and then judges all men (Rev 20).
See my Blogs on Revelation.
It connects him with the restitution of all things, first by taking vengeance on his enemies, and then restoring all things. First Rev 20, then Rev 21.
"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day." 2Th 1:7-10
One day, whether the day of our death, or the last day, each of us will stand before Jesus, and he will ask us, "I hear you have something to say to me?"
All of the wise cracks will end, and you will have nothing to say; you will bend the knee to him, and confess he is God.
"That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Php 2:10-11
Today is the day to stop being in knowing rebellious denial; in your heart of hearts, you know he is God! Repent and humble yourself before him, for he has said: "him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." Jhn 6:37
