The First Commandment

The First Commandment

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exo 20:2-3

Volumes can be written on each commandment; I will deal with what I see to be the main point of each.

The main point of the First Commandment is that there is in fact only one eternally self-existing Being, who has neither beginning nor end.

God knows that, he knows who and what he is, he tells us to acknowledge it.

We call that eternally self-existing Being, God.

But what is his name? In the King James Bible, and many other English translations, the word “LORD” in all capitals, is used for the Hebrew “Jehovah”. Yahweh is the same

name, it just represents a different pronunciation.

Jehovah is God’s name, his personal name.

Jehovah means “I Am that I Am”, the Eternally self-existing one. Italian uses “The Eternal One” for Jehovah.

“And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and He said, “You will say this to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. ” Exo 3:14

In the First Commandment Jehovah is telling us that he alone is the eternally self-existing one; and so he is to be our God, the one whom we are to worship; the ONLY one we

worship.

We could re-write the first statement as follows: I am the eternal one, the only one you must worship. You must not have other persons or objects of worship which replace of

me!

Since he is eternal, without beginning or end, he pre-existed all things. He made all things out of nothing, by speaking them into existence. He created matter, and infused

that matter, with its energy. This is the Cosmos (Greek), the Universe (Latin).

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth … and God said …” Gen 1:1, 3

“By faith we understand that the universe was framed by the word of God, so that things that are seen were not made out of things which are visible.” Heb 11:3

And then he made the first man, Adam.

“Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” Gen 1:26

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Gen 1:27

“Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.” Gen 2:7

“Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man, He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.” Gen 2:22

Hear what God says about himself:

“Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last. I am He.” Isa 41:4

“You are My witnesses, says the LORD, and My servant whom I have chosen that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God

formed, nor shall there be after Me.” Isa 43:10

“Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb: I am the LORD who makes all things, who stretches out the heavens alone, who spreads abroad

the earth by Myself,” Isa 44:24

“Listen to Me, O Jacob and Israel, whom I called: I am He; I am the First, and I am the Last. My hand also has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has spanned

the heavens; when I call to them, they stand up together.” Isa 48:12-13

If this is true, it is then absurd to worship anyone else but this Person.

And if this is true, then the entire evolutionary based scientific and humanistic system is absolutely wrong; and not just wrong, but in rebellion against this God.

Fall at this Commandment, and you miss everything, for now and for eternity.
