Sin

Sin

In the last Blog we looked at

Mat 1:20-21, “But while he (Joseph) thought on these things, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for He who is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

So that begs the question, “What is sin?”

The bible says, “Whoever practices sin breaks the law, for sin is lawlessness.” 1Jn 3:4

Just as countries have laws, and anyone who breaks those laws is a law breaker, a criminal; so too God has laws, and the breaking of His laws is called sin. Sinning is criminal activity against God, breaking his Law, expressed concisely in the Ten Commandments.

If we break the laws of our government, we will suffer the consequences; there is a penalty. God does the same; He will punish sin.

Have you ever lied? Ever stolen something? Ever committed a sexual sin? Ever coveted someone else’s possessions? Whether you actually did it, or just thought about doing it, it is sin.

Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said by the ancients, you shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Mat 5:27-28

The same principle applies to any sin: if you think of stealing, you have stolen; if you think of lying, you have lied, etc. There is not one of us who has not sinned, does not sin, and in fact is not continually sinning.

Say you are 45 years old, you have been sinning for 40 plus years. At only 1 sin a day, that is 40 x 365 = 14,600 sins; 14600 crimes against God. We talk about second offenders, repeat offenders. There is no word for a 14,600th time offender!

Every one of us has a big problem!
