Uniformitarianism
Uniformitarianism.
From Wikipedia:
"Uniformitarianism, also known as the Doctrine of Uniformity or the Uniformitarian Principle, is the assumption that the same natural laws and processes that operate in our present-day scientific observations have always operated in the universe in the past and apply everywhere in the universe. It refers to invariance in the metaphysical principles underpinning science, such as the constancy of cause and effect throughout space-time, but has also been used to describe spatiotemporal invariance of physical laws. Though an unprovable postulate that cannot be verified using the scientific method, some consider that uniformitarianism should be a required first principle in scientific research."
The bold is mine.
How interesting!, an "underpinning principle of science," and "a required first principle in scientific research," CANNOT " be verified using the scientific method!"
At least we Christians are honest, and say we accept things which we cannot see, by faith, based on the written word of God!
So, Uniformitarianism ... it is not new! It was a principle of the ancient world, of the Greek philosophical system.
"Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:" 2Pe 3:3-5
First, notice that people who hold to Uniformitarianism are scoffers, who walk after their own lusts. They do not scoff at scripture because of factual issues, they scoff at scripture, because they want to walk after their own lusts. It is a moral decision on their part. They see God's creation, but suppress the knowledge that the creation gives us: There is a Creator God (Rom 1). And in addition, God has written his moral law on their hearts (Rom2), and so they know they are answerable to him, but since they want to do, what they want do, which is to walk after their own lusts, they mock, saying "where is the promise of his coming?" They think they can dismiss God, cause him to no longer exist, simply by saying he does not exist. The atheist says, I know there is no God, but they cannot know there is no God, because that knowledge would require them to simultaneously be in all places in the Universe, at the same time, to verify that there is in fact no God. The atheist does not want there to be a God, but in reality, they really know there is a God. If I spent all my time and energy fighting against the Man-in-the-Moon, you would think I am crazy; why would I fight against a non-entity. In all their fighting against God, whom they say does not exist, they "doth protest too loudly," showing that they know he actually does exist, but wish he didn't!
Peter says that creation, everything being made out of nothing, being made by God simply speaking it into existence (Gen 1 and Heb 11:3), is so obvious, that it is willful obstinance on the part of man to deny it. In Rom 1, Paul says that in creation, God has shown us he exists, but men willfully suppress that knowledge.
Second, Peter continues by saying, that things have not always continued as we see them.
"Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:" 2Pe 3:6
God flooded the world, wiping it clean of all the evil people. The fossils, oil and natural gas reserves that we are tapping today, are all the plants and animals and people who were buried by the Flood. The petroleum reserves, and the fossils witness to God's judgment in the Flood.
God later comes back down to earth, and confuses the rebellious builders of the Tower of Babel, by creating languages (Gen 11). Languages also witness to God's judgment.
Later, because of their sinful behavior, God rains down fire and destroys the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Those cities were in the Jordan Rift Valley, where the Dead Sea is today! The bareness of the Dead Sea, its very name!, witnesses to God's judgment.
Peter tells us: remember God has intervened in world history with cataclysmic events, judging mankind for their sin, and he is currently "keeping in store" the world for the future final judgment.
Third, things will not continue on like this forever, there is a last day, a last minute, a last second!
"But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." 2Pe 3:7-10
It is to be a judgment of ungodly people; the ungodly, will enter into eternal death in hell with the devil!
We like to say, God hates sin, but loves the sinner. That is not correct. Sinners are in active rebellion against God, and as such, he hates them. He tells them repent, they refuse. Right now he is waiting, but there is coming a day, the last day, when the waiting is over.
"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." Mat 25:41
For Christians, we enter eternal bliss in heaven to be with God forever.
"Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:" Mat 25:34
In Noah's day, God cleansed the earth with water; on the last day, he will cleanse it with fire.
But now he is waiting, being "long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." Time does not matter to him: 1000 years or 1 day; he fills eternity, he is not time bound; he does not run our of time! He is in no rush. It will happen at just the exact, pre-determined moment.
So, do not believe the lie of Uniformitarianism! It is a lie of the devil, who is the father of lies, which he propagates under the guise of "fact based science," but which "science" cannot prove !, to lull you to sleep, and eventually to your eternal destruction.
In Heb 3, God says 3 times, if you hear his voice, repent!, do not continue to provoke him by ignoring him. He is calling out to you.
"Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" Eze 33:11
